Shanghai ; Pudong

Back from my 1 week retreat to China , must say that I really am truly blessed and thankful to the Lord and my parents for granting me this opportunity to travel aboard with 2 of my best friends. On a whole, the trip was an enjoyable one, with great hospitality from Vanessa's parents, Auntie especially, who had to accompany us throughout the 7 days. Also, Kai Ge who drove us around for 7 days. Well, the weather was enjoyable, averaging about 4 degrees everyday, man was it cold when the wind blew, but nonetheless enjoyable. Nothing much to blog about this trip, enjoyed the company and the "hiatus" from the hectic life of Singapore. Catching up with nessa and shopping!

Thoughts after..

Today's a break from " Influence-R// "
I feel that the books " tuesdays with morrie " and " chasing daylight "
have really rubbed off me
more specifically, the theme of having luncheons
how a small even such as a meal
can be used to break off ties, or make some
never underestimate the power of a meal
it is through the way people eat
you see the type of person they are
i am a person who is very fond of meals
a knack for food
I enjoy eating, not only the expensive stuff
but hawker food too
there's something in hawker food that a restaurant can never emulate
and vice versa
it's all about what they call " ambiance "

Influence-R//

Focus is something so important and essential
it is taught for over hundreds of dollars
all those self-help, motivational speakers
all just gear you up, to focus
cause with focus, you have a direction
you know where you are headed
thus you have, what we call a driving force
when someone is without vision or direction
we tend to go around in circles
and that is human nature
Lets take a look at a simple example
the big "O" levels which i am going to embark on soon
i always thought i had enough time
boy o boy, was i delusional
now it's nearing and i'm starting to feel the anxiety
and as i look back, and i see those who are doing well
lets say my classmate : GSK !
those in my class would know who is he
he has a direction, he knows he is going to SAJC for 1st 3 months
get that additional 2 points off to be assured a place in SAJC
thats why he does well, cause he has a direction
for myself? unsure about poly or JC
yea, getting in the first 3 months for SAJC
for what? security
at least i know i have somewhere to go for the 1st 3 months
i don't really know where i'm headed
i have a rough idea, but rough isn't enough
in today's society, its all about being specific
at subway? you cant say you just want bread
you gotta say which type
at pastamania? you cannot say u want any noodles
you gotta say which type
isn't all these little things just evident about our society today
how making specific goals and having a specific direction helps
isn't that what all those motivational planning courses talk about

there must be a long term and a short term goal
it's like driving up to say genting
you know where you're headed, genting [ long term goal ]
but along the way, you know you are going to have pit-stops
to rest and recharge [ short term goals ]
and its the short term goals that keep you in check
so you know you are on the right track
this is why they say planning is so important

i've found the parenting topics very intriguing
how many of us have been directly influence by our parents
in a negative manner that is
levitt's take on how much effect a parent has on a child is limited
as it has already been decided by the parents' education and lifestyle
but on my take on it, i believe that the parents act like the mould
while the child is the dough
however, true enough, as levitt showed
the peers are a stronger mould to a child
how many of us turn racist over night?
laugh over racist jokes?
poking fun at every "foreign worker" in our midst?
It is true, that it is the environment that grow up/are in
that really makes who with are
the friends we hang out with are who we are
thus we find security in them
It's easy to see the difference between a guy in an all-guys school
and in a mix school
and that is just the many of such examples
remember how you made your group of friends?
common interest?
just happened?
friends are really the moulding factor in your life
unknowingly, they hold your destiny and future
not really yourself
in this life and society we live in
it's the connections really to how we get around this unfair world
all this talk about meritocracy is not entirely sweet
imagine guy A and guy B, equal qualities and performance
but guy A gets the job just cause he is acquainted to the employer
is this meritocracy?
then again, it is quite evident in today Singapore
the Malay - Chinese gap
at this moment, i must take a stand that i'm not racist
i've been largely exposed to both races
i grew up in a community of malays, spoke malay
dress like em, not entirely but you get the drift
this gap is similar to what the americans see as the white-black gap
or the white - afro american gap
how discriminated some malays are in today Singapore
how they are not as likely to succeed as the chinese
why is this happening?
discrimination
the acts of a few foolish malays that jeopardizes the rest of its community
this shows what economists and philosophisers call the chain reaction
also known as the ripple effect or the butterfly effect
however insignificant you might seem
you play a part in a bigger picture
every action you make, causes a ripple/butterfly effect
thus i leave you with three questions to ponder upon :

1) Is your destiny in safe hands?
2) Is meritocracy, really meritocracy?

on different scenarios and issues that causes miscommunication
one guy might see it as this, another differently

all these are inevitable
